Innovative Partnership Turns Dreams into Reality

People who dream of building their own home can turn fantasy into reality by signing up to an innovative new scheme led by Cherwell District Council and ACE Training.

The two organisations have teamed up to offer people the opportunity to build their own home through the council’s Build! project while obtaining NVQ and CSCS qualifications with ACE Training.

From July 2013, ACE Training will be providing 12 week courses in site carpentry and brickwork at its specialist construction training centre in Kidlington. In turn, this will equip trainees with the skills necessary to undertake the Build! project, which invites people to help finish building their own homes in exchange for cheaper rents or purchase prices.

Cllr Debbie Pickford, lead member for housing, said:

“By teaming up with ACE Training the benefits of this scheme will be two-fold for the people who sign up. Firstly, by completing a construction course, trainees will not only gain self-build skills for this project, but they will obtain nationally-recognised and transferable qualifications which they can use to improve their prospects of employment.

“And secondly, by signing up to build their own house, trainees will have a hand in the construction of their own home and receive financial savings as a result. We really do feel this ticks all the boxes in terms of delivering an innovative and purposeful project which will truly benefit those who it aims to help.”

On completing their courses trainees will receive an NVQ Diploma Level 1 in site carpentry or brickwork and will also train for their CSCS card, allowing them to work on site in their chosen trade.

Adam Marsh, MD of ACE Training said:

“We urge people to apply for these courses, this is a brilliant opportunity for local people to train in trade skills and improve their employability. The courses are fully funded, and all of the training can be used on site at the Build! project. We are very proud to be supporting Cherwell District Council with this important scheme.”

The training has been made possible through the support of Cherwell’s Build! Programme, Cherwell Job Club and ACE Training and supports Cherwell’s vision to deliver 250 homes across the district by 2016.

This opportunity is open to all people on Cherwell’s Housing Register who work, live or study within the District. No experience is necessary and applications from all ages, fitness abilities and backgrounds will be considered. Trainees must be enthusiastic and committed to the scheme to succeed.
